musician, cinema-woman and street social worker
born in 1981 in Teheran, from 1985 in Karlsruhe and grew up in Berlin. Since she can think, her life revolves around cinema, culture and arts. Social work came in quite late, but is her calling and center of her life. Since 2008 she works as licensed child care worker, studies extra-occupational social work and works with Gangway e.V. – street social work in Berlin in the theatre project „Hermes“ after working on Neukölln’s streets for four years.
Since 2002 she’s been working at various Berlin open-air cinemas. Since 2004 she manages the Kreuzberg open-air cinema and since 2011 hosts one of the Berlinale cinemas in the Panorama section.
In the world of film she has worked a couple of times, too – in front of as well as behind the camera. From carrying cables to booming. From tears in front of the camera to laughter in the breaks. Black/white as well as colour, sometimes loud, sometimes gentle.
Julia Thomas is working in film since 1992. First in production design for national and international cinema- and tv films such as The Neverending Story III, Prince Valiant, Ogre or Polizeiruf 110. Since 1998 she works on her own as filmmaker and producer of documentaries and experimental films.
2008 – 2009 she chaired the working group film for the media network MStreet. Since 2010 she studies social sciences at the Humboldt university in Berlin.
